Neil has just published a magical little book which was inspired by a simple - and powerful - exercise that we facilitated during Inspired Coach. Participants are encouraged to relate a metaphorical story that illustrates a challenge they are facing. Neil's story took on a life of its own and became The Scarecrow's Song.

The principle of compassion lies at the heart of all religious, ethical and spiritual traditions, calling us always to treat all others as we wish to be treated ourselves. Compassion impels us to work tirelessly to alleviate the suffering of our fellow creatures, to dethrone ourselves from the centre of our world and put another there, and to honour the inviolable sanctity of every single human being, treating everybody, without exception, with absolute justice, equity and respect.

I am watching more and more people burn out - driving themselves with a relentless determination to 'be successful' only to find it all falling away. Is there another approach? As I look along my bookshelves I see many hundreds of books on personal and professional development – almost all of which I have read and studied over the past fifteen years or so. Add to this the thousands of hours of seminars, conferences and retreats that I have attended on my own account and as part of our leadership research programme and the sheer amount of information about personal excellence in my head and on my shelves is overwhelming. What is this all about? Why do some of us spend so much energy looking for the secrets of success in the words and ideas of so many authors?

Is "authentic" just another faddish term?

I wonder if the current focus on "authenticity' is a strong (and largely positive) reaction to generations of hypocrisy from those who should be providing moral and ethical leadership - parents, teachers, clergy, politicians, managers and business leaders.
