Taking a lead from IBM, many leading universities including the Open University in UK, and a growing number of large organisations, The Institute of Human Development has built a 3D learning environment on the Second Life virtual world platform making learning engaging, playful and immersive. While individuals of all ages and learning styles are engaging with virtual world technology, the platform is particularly suited to Generation Y students.

Saturday, November 14, 2009 at 10:13PM As more enterprises and consumers explore the 3D Internet, the ecosystem of virtual world hosts, application providers, and IT vendors need to offer a variety of standards-based solutions in order to meet end user requirements. To support this, IBM and Linden Lab are committed to exploring the interoperability of virtual world platforms and technologies, and plan to work with industry-wide efforts to further expand the capabilities of virtual worlds.
"As the 3D Internet becomes more integrated with the current Web, we see users demanding more from these environments and desiring virtual worlds that are fit for business," said Colin Parris, vice president, Digital Convergence, IBM. "BM and Linden Lab's working together can help accelerate the use and further development of common standards and tools that will contribute to this new environment."
Friday, September 25, 2009 at 5:39AM Machinima is a growing hobby and artform for creative amination filmmakers. 3D Virtual Worlds provide unlimited possibilities for imaginitive filmmakers.
"The Princess and the Pea" by talented machinma artist Toxic Menges was filmed at three locations in Second Life including our very own Amphitheatre on Pathfinder Highlands.
Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at 11:38AM Members of rapidly growing virtual world network Koinup have voted with their feet making Pathfinder Islands one of the top ten visited sites in Second Life during August. This is fantastic news considering how new we are.
The uptake of virtual world technology in thew HR and Learning arena is understandably slow. Second Life takes time to learn, and is not the most intuitive platform but we believe that as more and more people engage with the 3D internet, IHD will continue to lead the way.
Organisations such as the Environment Agency and Inmsarsat are 'early adopters' - and more will follow. Visionary HR Directors should contact Adrian Gilpin to discuss how to engage generation Y in enterprise sponsored personal development.
